About Us

Our Mission and Vision

Saint Mark United Church of Christ has served our community in this location for over 65 years. We are dedicated to sharing God’s love and promoting inclusivity.  See the section below on how we came to be from the merger of 3 previous congregations.

We believe in the strength of diverse voices coming together in worship, service, and fellowship.

Our doors are open to everyone who seeks a deeper relationship with God and a community of love.

St Mark United Church of Christ

A Brief History

St. Mark Evangelical and Reformed Church, which later became St. Mark United Church of Christ, was a result of a merger of three Evangelical and Reformed Churches of Terre Haute, Bethany, St. Paul, and Zion. They voted to come together on April 15, 1956. Zion's history goes back to 1891 in Terre Haute. St. Paul's history goes back to 1887, and Bethany was organized Thanksgiving Day of 1912. On December 2, 1956, the first constitution of St. Mark Evangelical and Reformed Church was voted on and approved.

The first stage of our building was built in 1958. This included the sanctuary, Alpha Hall, the offices, restrooms, and chapel. It was built on 3 1/2 acres the church members purchased by buying interest-bearing bonds. The property was purchased for $6,500, chosen because it was across from Deming Park, originally was a "pony-ride” business.

The Dedication Day bulletin from Sunday May 3, 1959, says "St. Mark Church considers herself a part of the United Church of Christ, which is a merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches entered into June 1957." The program also noted that 11 children were baptized on that day. The church building was extended to the west after the first mortgage was burned in 1974. The dedication of Omega Hall and additional classrooms was celebrated on September 18, 1977.

The word "Oikoumene", above the St. Mark Church Cornerstone at the south entrance, is a Greek word for Ecumenical, means "universal or 'World-wide." The insignia of which this word is a part is the symbol of the World Council of Churches. -The Churches in their togetherness form the 'Oikoumene', that is the fellowship of the Churches of Christ, which is world-wide, and which seeks to serve all people everywhere. The new St. Mark Church, in her policy and program, chose to be a vital part of this Ecumenical movement.

Pastors

The first pastor of St. Mark was Glenn O. Martensen in February 1957 until early in 1965 and was succeeded by Reverend Maurice H. LeFevre. Rev. Kenneth Hayden followed Rev. LeFevere in March 1973 and was here until 1988. Larry Balleine became pastor in August 1988. Wayne McAllister was pastor from June 1997 to August 5, 2001. Dr. Jimmy R. Watson served the church from June 2003 until 2007. Rev. Teresa Higus served as pastor at St. Mark UCC from February 15, 2009 until May1, 2022. There were several supply preachers and interim ministers in between including Rev. Dr. Paul A. Gettinger, Rev. Carly Stucklen Sather, and Rev. Kathi Elliott who is currently our transitional pastor.

We are currently seeking to find a pastor who will serve both St. Mark UCC and Trinity Lutheran of Terre Haute. Both congregations are currently working together to explore how we can work together sharing a ministry and mission that serves God and our community here in Terre Haute.
